Space 1.8, Nala Sinephro, Meditate Blend

Space 1.8 is an album of suspension, a meditation on sound by Caribbean-Belgian composer, producer, and synth artist Nala Sinephro. Released on Warp Records, it was her debut album, though it carries the weight of a seasoned architect of mood. Built from layered harp, modular synths, and contributions from London’s vibrant jazz community, the record hums with restraint and radical softness. Each piece unfolds with minimal intervention, inviting the most deep of listening, feeling closer to ambient than jazz arrangement. Nala studied healing potentials of sound, and you can feel it here in this release, not in obvious crescendos, but in sustained tones and textures that settle our nervous systems. Bass murmurs under the floorboards, saxophones drift like clouds. Time stretches.  (also shout out to my eldest who introduced this to me, and I was reminded that I will always be a student) 

Made with Benzoin Resin, Dragons Blood Resin and White Sandalwood. All three of these ingredients are used for cleansing, purifying and meditation and when blended together, create a strong-but-sweet, warm and encompassing fragrance which can fill one's  being. The scent is enveloping without being overwhelming and when burning, can lead to feelings of being grounded and content. We use real benzoin and dragonsblood resins, ground to a powder and mixed, according to an ancient recipe, with white sandalwood to aid in combustibility and create a full bodied scent. Each stick is 4" long and burns for 40 minutes. As always makko (an inner bark) and acacia gum is used as binding agents.

Each stick is made by grinding the herbs, flowers, and spices into a powder and then dipping the sticks in resin, rolling the ground herb onto the stick, and then sun-drying.
